Truly being in Love spiritually is a Sacred Intercourse. Due to the Love being Sacred, the weak are not prepared for this Loving. Those not surrendered to the Sacred are not prepared for this Connection. This Loving takes courage. This Union is for the strong and those willing to allow the Oneness to be a transformative means to change one inwardly and outwardly into the Image of the Love-Giver. The relationship is a fiery crucible to transmute all disordered, lesser loves needing to be consecrated to the Purpose of the Divine on Earth and Beyond.

One day in meditation, after writing much about Love in preparing a book on the subject, I was struck with this thought, "We need to remember that this Love is a holy Love."

Spiritual Love is a Love rightly ordered, purged of selfish ambition and narcissistic infatuation. At best, we likely only have moments of this in completion; otherwise, such spiritual Love is a process maturing with time and fidelity.
This Love is holy, that is "totally other, devoted, consecrated," for it arises from the Totally Other, the Holy One. The Sacredness derives from the Love deriving from intimacy with the Spirit, from whom all Love arises in the world of form, from the Formless.

T. S. Elliot contrasts two genres of fire. In the Four Quartets Elliot writes:
The only hope, or else despair Lies in the choice of pyre or pyre - To be redeemed from fire by fire.
Catholic spiritual theologian Ronald Rolheiser, in Forgotten Among the Lilies, addresses this transforming of fire by fire:
Given our infinite depth and our infinite hungers, in this life we will always be on fire. The fire within us will never be extinguished by attaining the right experiences - the right partner in love, the right job, the right city, the right friends, the right recognition. Our choice is not between restlessness and restfulness, but between two kinds of restlessness, between two kinds of fire - "pyre and pyre."
Rolheiser clarifies that lower expressions of love-desire are transformed by a higher Eros:
The solution to our restlessness, our fire, is to let it be consumed and transformed by a higher fire, a higher eros, a higher restlessness, the eros of God.
Eros refers to romantic-love, which seeks connection with another person or object. Eros was used in early Christian writings for the Divine Love. Eros can be between persons, also, not in a romantic or sexual relationship, strictly speaking.

In a sense, then, we are always seeking to be in Love, to make Love, to have intercourse. Elliot, Rolheiser, and the mystics provide us a means for the re-ordering of this erotic drive in a relationship with the Fire of Divine-Grace. Otherwise, we will seek completion and fulfillment "making Love" with materiality, including treating others as objects for merely our satisfaction.
A Holy Love is cleansed by the Fire of the Wholly-Otherness of the Wholly-Other. Love is lifted out of individuality, such as between two persons, and put in the context of Love as a pure expression of Universal Spirit.
Then, also, sexual intercourse becomes an act of reverent worship, of sacred adoration - a sacramental means of Grace. Sexual expression becomes two Subjects sharing holy Love within and as Holy Communion - in honor of, devotion to, and veneration of the Sacred within each other.
